I was able to compile openJDK 7 for snow leopard (works entirely, AWT included), from some patches at this project: Update Java For Mac Os X 10.6.8 Java Update For Mac El Capitan All things considered, Java for OS X is the thing that makes it possible for any application created using the Java framework to run on any Mac, with an interface that makes it look like a native app.
